What do i need to know to get a pallet expander?

I just turned 17 so ik im not growing anymore and i wanna get a pallet expander what should i know before getting one and hos do i convince thd orthodontist to give me one? Also if i get one isnt my maxilla going ti be wide and my lower third gonna be small? Upper teeth above bottom teeth or whats gonna happen
