The living organisms on this planet evolved through natural selection over billions of years and continue to do so. In terms of hominids, modern Humans are a species of primate belonging to the taxonomic family of great apes which includes chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans

Simple structures(in this case organic structures) evolved into more complex structures, after a threshold of data processing power was met, conscioussness rose in the mammalian brain for the structure to more efficiently process information but also to assert a larger amount of control over physical reality and even manipulate reality at the most fundametal level. Consciousness is essentially a virtual administrator who has limited free will and can deviate from the given path, thus being able to understand and manipulate physical reality at the atomic level. It's all an experiment by the creator/creators who exist outside of the system(universe). They want to see if something that was born inside the system can break free and transcend it.
