What does it mean when dogs bark at you?

I noticed that I attract a lot of unwanted attention from dogs, either stray or with a master when they are outside for a walk. The same happens with dogs relaxing in the front of houses, when they see me they immediately start barking. I didn't notice the same thing with other people, for example - an old lady can sit on a bench in the park with her dog on a leash, other people pass by and the dog ignores them. However when I get close, the dog starts barking like mad, the other dogs in the park usually join in, and all the eyes of people are on me, while I walk there being barked at...

Does someone know how I can make dogs stop barking at me?
I think they are triggered mostly by smell, sometimes I go in the park, I sit on a bench and drink a beer alone, and when I return, some dogs seem to go crazy, they really seem to hate the smell of alcohol for some reason.
In the movie "As Good as It Gets", Jack Nicholson starts wearing ham in his pockets so the neighbor's dog will like him, and the neighbor is amazed since his dog seems to hate everyone except Jack Nicholson, could this method actually work?

Yeah, this doesn't really work...
Stray dogs are usually medium or big sized and they rarely bark at me, also there aren't that many of them around these days. If I approach them they keep barking even more angry. If I try to attack them or chase them away, they run until they are at a safe distance, then bark some more. Sometimes they even follow me around barking like crazy, I chase them away, they keep coming back barking again etc., it's like they are provoking and trolling me.
With those on a leash taken for a walk by their master, I can't do anything, or I'll look like a crazy guy, some uneducated people even find the situation amusing, instead of disciplining their dog to shut up.
Those who are in a yard, behind a fence sometimes bark without even seeing me when I just approach. I've simply stood several times there, for minutes curious to see for how long they will bark, and it was like they were simply mad. Their masters also seem to be clueless on what happened to their dog and why he's barking like a lunatic.
