In my mind, it should be one of two things:
It should be a cinematic song, in a minor key, with a choir playing in the background. It should capture that these our the final moments of the people you are shooting and yourself. It shouldn't be overly sad, because you are going out in a blaze of glory. It also shouldn't be overly happy, as you are spilling blood.
Here are some examples of ER type 1:
TYPE 2
It should be somber sounding, like you've given up, but not in an overly forlorn way. You shouldn't feel to much pity. It should just sound grey, and kind of monotone, kind of disconnected. Like you've accepted this is the end, and are just going with the most logical solution (which is going ER), and not making an overly emotional, sad decision.
This is the perfect example of the mood you should have when you go ER. Shikamaru in this clip.
