What kind of pet should I buy

Thinking of buying a pet to cope, which would make me the happiest? I was thinking a dog but I don't know what breed and I also don't want to have to put a ton of work into it, so I'd be fine with a smaller animal, but I'm not sure which ones are good or if any show as much affection as dogs.
