and can braces do so

I think the term 'recessing' is a bad one. Nothing pushes your maxilla back (that's impossible). It just fails to grow.

The failure of growth can be caused by multiple factors. Hormonal imbalance, malnourishment, bad tongue posture, tongue ties, too much soft food. There are also genetical factors such as inbreeding, Treacher Collins, Antley-Bixler, etc. But that's a very low percentage of people.

To address your question about braces, it highly depends. Depends on the quality of the braces, your age and the professionalism of your orthodontist.

If you're in the years during which you're still growing, getting your bite fixed is beneficial. Because often times fixing the bite can help you get rid of bad habits and help the development of the rest of your facial bones.

But if your ortho makes you wear braces for more than two years without any result and you keep living with bad habits during your growth years, then no, braces are not a good thing.

maybe it's due to how the photos have been taken, but around a year ago before i got braces a photo of me from the side was professionally taken for an xray to see my teeth but they also happened to take a photo in the normal light spectrum and i use that photo as a base to see how my side profile has changed

though the problem is that i cannot recreate that photo 1:1 so i cant tell if my maxilla recessed or if im just dogshit at taking photos

Would be tough to replicate the past photo. So, you shouldn't trust it (y)
