What's Wrong with Merlot?

Why does it get such a bad rap?

If there are any wine snobs at all on this forum (highly doubtful), this is my opinion: Merlot is too 'round' and lacks detail and complexity. It's the 'junk food' of grape varietals.

That said, one of the most expensive wines in the world (Chateaux Petrus) happens to be made with Merlot. Go figure.

Rieslings are good, but poorly made ones tend to be too sweet. You gotta get one with strong acidity to balance out the sweetness.

You probably don't like reds because they're too dry. Try Beaujolais.

Haha, that's exactly the movie I was thinking of when I posted this thread, except the movie never answered the question of why Merlot has a bad reputation.

Pinot Grigio is the white wine equivalent of Merlot. It's seen as cheap and low-class because it tends to be insipid.

A guy I worked with, use to work at wine shop and fancy deli, and he said any wine you like to drink is a good one. For me, Summer is cold Pinot Grigio and winter, or what we call it in the south, is Pinot Noir.

Pinor Noir (especially from Burgundy and Oregon) is awesome.
