While this is true, there is also another very good reason why women will downplay the value of a man's physical appearance: they want to always be able to tell a man's genetic quality.

Women are biologically designed to be selective as they have to raise suboptimal offspring if a man frauds his genetic quality. It's the same reason that women (and the media) are deadset against straight men wearing makeup. It makes it more difficult for them to separate genetic wheat from chaff.
