As for your question, I think unattractive guys are forced to lean into "how smart they are", because unlike looks, how smart somebody is is less easily discernable.
And there's countless factors, that make quantifying it 1000s of times harder than looks

So unattractive guys rely on a positive characteristic that isn't easily able to be refuted
