Tito was a benevolent dictator, which is something very rare. Truly cared for his people, and that's probably what held Communist Yugoslavia so well together. Also Yugoslavia was probably alongside DDR the most successful communist country.

DDR was the role model state of the Eastern Bloc. That doesn't mean life was nearly as comfy as in West Germany, but you can't call it a shithole. I recommend you a series called Deutschland 83, it's about a East German lad who is forced to spy in West Germany. I personally loved it.
