Let's say a criminal is about to murder an innocent man. God knows the criminal will kill before he commits the murder. Still, the criminal exercises his own free will to think about and pull the trigger; his thoughts and actions are not controlled, but they are written.

God knows that evil will occur, but he does not cause it.

This is a brutal realisation, but it is logically sound.

"indirectly cause" is not the appropriate wording here. God knows it will happen. But the criminal acts totally of his own free will.

If he made the world and predetermined everything he indirectly caused it. HE was the one who made the world so the criminal would act the way he acted. But still religion is a huge cope for people who can't cope with the fact that meaning of life is unknown.
