continuous cope is the only way they can keep cognitive dissonance at bay. the idea of permanent oblivion is extremely traumatic, i feel most people put it off until they're too old, and if they don't have a solid cope wall of religion to fall back on, it can be very painful. a lot of hospitals and hospices pump moribund patients full of morphine because being fully alert in the throes of impending death is excruciating for the mind.
