By privilege, politicians were from the high class which was based on education, political contacts and land ownership. Nowadays the high class means you have businesses, not necessarily status or being respect by a lot of people. Leftism is the politics of the lower class and the minorities. There were uprisings all the time in the past. Kings would get usurped by a rebellion and replaced by a different king all the time. The difference now is that rebellions are a lot less common because people are complacent.
