They jump up and down about Trump sanctioning some "penguin island" not realising that companies use these islands to register their companies to dodge tax.

Anyone with an IQ above room temperature would realise this.

It was but a joke in my post sire. I was merely pointing out how every single place has tariffs.

I mean the whole thing is flawed.
From imposing blanket tariffs to deciding to wage a tariff war on the entire world all at once.
I just don't see how the Americans benefit from this approach.

Long term it forces american companies to come back to america and stop outsourcing, in the short term there will be suffering.

If Trump does not run a thord term then the companies can just wait it out and pass on thr cost to the consumer. Trump needs to groom a Republican successor to make that shit last at least the next 15 years

I think Trump wants a trade surplus with every single country USA trades with. Which is good intentions but very hard to achieve without cutting through your economy with a butter knife

It’s not about wrecking the economy but forcing others to play fair, cutting reliance on foreign goods, and boosting domestic production.

This also isn't Trumps policy, this whole thing is the Heritage foundations idea btw they have been wanting this since 2020

A large part of the tax burden will be picked up by American consumers.
Europeans will continue to leverage internationalized supply chains and undercut American exports.

Why would the Americans would to bring back low wage textile manufacturing from Vietnam anyway?
The tariffs should have been more focused on high wage, strategic industries imo.

While yes they can, other companies will have cheaper domestic production and be more competitive.

That's the benefit of tarrifs for the local economy

Part of Trumps Art of the Deal, offer up something really outrageous to bring the other party to the negotiations table.

For example with Vietnam he will force them to give up rare earth minerals in exchange for waving tarrifs.

He wanted the EU to spend 350 billion on US energy.

It's all about getting these trade deals

As I said good intentions, but forcing others to play fair aint gonna do it. Trade is never fair. Those who have leverage will use that leverage. Trump tariffed India and China. Only one of them has the leverage to flip off Trump back. Guess who ?

In the New York City subreddit it’s actually against the rules to β€œdismiss COVID-19” like what the fuck does that even mean?

I'm not even saying it would work, I'm moreso surprised China is the only nation standing up to America. I thought the EU would have more of a response but i guess not.

The EU cant do jack shit man, its sad. This aint the 19th and 20th century anymore. The colonisers are gone. EU doesnt have the mentality to fight for itself. China had the Century of Humiliation and will not back down even if it risks the country burning down from within. All Xi has to say to his people is that the Americans are trying to harm them like the Brits did in the opium wars and bam the populace is now firmly on your side.

Let's say Trump gets these trade deals, why would that bring back American manufacturing?
Using your example of Vietnam.

Vietnam is an insignificant export market for the US. They're too poor to afford American goods and services anyway.

It's the imports that matter. Whatever trade deal the US agrees with third world countries, I don't see how they're going to lose their competitive advantage in producing shitty clothes and other low skilled work.

Surely, it would be more consistent for Trump to impose tariffs and says this is the new trade order.

It's time to end off shore-manufacturing one and for all - it will come a tremendous cost but it's more coherent.

What's to stop the EU from continuing to offshore their supply chains to undercut expensive American domestic produced goods?

The funniest subreddit in this whole saga is wallstreetbets. Few are making gains and post but the entire subreddit is posting images of the market going down the gutter. Someone even posted a Wendy's ad should things go south for the average regard of wallstreetbets

The EU is a lot more bureaucratic. They probably haven't even agreed on a unified response in the European council yet.

Tremendous cost is understating it. The cost required to not only build up capacity for important technological products but ensure adequate supply is mind boggling. That is not enough however you need to manufacture products that are bleeding edge and competitive which needs not only serious money but a highly skilled labour force too. That would be a mammoth task since most manufacturing moved to China a long time back.

Trump's strategy won't even bring reduce the trade deficit anyway.
If he slaps tariffs on other countries, they'll retaliate and US exports will fall as well - increasing the deficit once again.

Of course, if American manufacturers, let's say car manufacturers, see increased domestic demand for cars due to tariffs on foreign car markers, they'll also export less. So the trade deficit will continue to increase.

It doesn't make sense.

Or Trump negotiates a bunch of deals, waiving tariffs and American manufacturing won't come back!

No, they were presenting it as Trump being chronically incompetent.
It's a weird attack line considering he crashed the markets on a level comparable to Black Thursday.
I'd start with that attack line instead if I were a liberal.

It is the Smoot Hawley Act once again. It will look good on paper but it ultimately worsened the Great Depression. The only good thing is that I can put some money in the market and get good returns in the forseeable future in my market. It is getting tariffed left right and center

You are correct but I'm just talking about what Americas plans are, this is not designed to benefit the average joe btw this is for the benefit of thr top 1%.

Right now they are buying the dip, and are going to make record profit.

It doesn't even matter if 100 million americans starve to death.

Yes, we're all getting fucked here.
Of course there's a case for selective tariffs on strategic American industries like car manufacturing, chips, military industrial complex etc...
But the whole strategy seems confused to me.
Bessent, Trump, Lutnik all say conflicting things about what the tariffs are meant to achieve.
Some say it's a negotiating posture to bring down tariffs globally, others say it's about recalibrating the global trade system.

What is Musk doing there anyway. This is blatant corporate pulling strings. The political class is not even hiding it. If Teddy Roosevelt was alive he would be foaming at the mouth regarding how unelected rich barons are waltzing around with their children with the President

Musk is trying to distance himself now. He was in the process of being unceremoniously booted out - however Trump frames it.

I think rich barons have always been involved in American politics but just in a more underhanded way.

I remember visiting the J P Morgan library in New York and learning that in 1907 panic, all the great financial dynasties of America, the Rockerfellers, Mellons etc.. gathered there to agree on recapitalising the banks to prevent a bank run.

Outsiders are only able to work 180 days in special positions, its not Trump booting him but moreso standard protocol.

There's a lot of misinformation about this making it seem like they had a falling out

We'll have to wait and see. Musk has been insulting Navarro, one of the chief architects of Trump's trade policy, calling him "Retardo" and saying he "hasn't built shit".
Granted, the media has been trying to overplay any divisions in the Trump camp for a long time but it does look like some cracks are beginning to appear.
