i've not done proper studies on that but i'm guessing the correlation is small & in elite players the correlation drops to near 0

because i've seen interviews with grandmasters and i believe every single one of them said they were either average or below average. i remember hikaru especially saying that he did terrible (in the c range or something)

sure, the sample size is not big, but your correlation would suggest at least something noteworthy

what i mean by the math correlation with chess skill being near zero at elite levels is that math skills most likely help in the beginner stages. players rated from about 0 to 1600 elo do not have many patterns stored, so they compute positions like a math problem instead of using tactical or strategic pattern knowledge. at a high level (around 2400 and above) it is mostly patterns, which does not require anything other than dedication, assuming you have the baseline talent

the explanation i found is that it is domain specific and relies on long-term memory rather than iq-style reasoning. this reduces the reliance on iq even further, lowering the overall barrier. since the barrier is low and a large portion of the population is average, no strong correlation would appear
