Why are the Eastern block countries so good at STEM?

If you look up the results from IMO, IPHO, IBO, ICHO ...etc, you'll notice that a lot of eastern block countries like Russia, China and post-soviet countries consistently won gold medals and if you look up on random science pages on wikipedia, you'll eventually stomp across a Russian name. Are the STEM courses in the eastern blocks generally more rigorous and challenging than the west's?

Because people in the West want to study stupid liberal arts programmes or Mickey mouse degrees like psychology or sociology.

Meanwhile gooks are studying quantum mechanics in high school.

It would be over for western educational institutions is they didn't import students. Making them pay 5x the amount western students pay as well is a massive scam.
