Why can’t high schools make better schedules?

Examples of bad schedule traits:

• Passing periods shorter than 5 minutes
• School starting before 7:30 am or ending after 4:00 pm
• A separate lunch for each grade (so you can’t hang out with friends in other grades)
• Lunches 30 minutes or shorter
• Times not multiples of 5 (e.g. 3rd period: 9:37 to 10:42 am)
• Freshmen (first year students) follow a different schedule than everyone else
• Rare, but at some schools dismissal isn’t the same time every day of the week

I swear to God, no high school ever gets this shit right.

My current school has 6-minute passing periods and a single 50-minute lunch for all grades, but the hours are 8:30 to 4:10.

The #1 high school in my metro area starts at 7:15 am and has four 30-minute lunch periods.

But there’s a high school in my district that has a 70-minute lunch. Mirin.
