I've heard that it affects the consciousness of the human (with a soul) but I don't know in which way exactly.
Also I've heard it is like an "update" for the organic portals, getting a new hive mind, making them more "zombies".

The most dark stuff I've heard is that it makes the soul unable to leave the body once you die. It would fit with the description of the "mark of the beast" I suppose.
