Why did Hamas Take hostages? Wouldnt it have been better to kill as many as possible?

Death toll of Israelis could have been Over 2000.

Now its Just 1500
 
it’s a common strategy by them because they can trade 1 israeli hostage for like 50 hamas prisoners
