Why didn't old school bodybuilders have the 6 buckle abs?

The ideal body type is a broad shoulders tapered down to very small waist.

If you have a small waist you won't see abs (the six buckles or whatever they're called). I think this is actually more the ideal, isn't it? If you see the natural bodybuilders in the past, none of them showed "abs" but they had very small waists. They may have had the 4 indentations at most.

Wide waists have pop out abdominal wall

But also conventional success for old school bodybuilders was very different. For example they were careful not to train pecs too much because a large chest was thought of as feminine. Today, a large muscular chest is probably the most masculine feature you can have besides large shoulders.

The best old school bodybuilder (Sergio Oliva) had pretty good abs:

Cope.
Chest should always be somewhat flat and not too rounded.

I'm not putting forward any claims about chests lol, just saying opinions on it in the BB community have changed over time

BBs then were much less conditioned, 10% rather than 6% which is what most are now

You can see the outline of the abs as high as 15%. They didn't want that look . They wanted a small waist and did the stomach vacum. Now all the mid section looks puffed out and bloated . The lower bf does nothing to enhance. Small waists are partly genetic and harder to achieve than abs. Most people can do the latter. It started in the 90s.

They put a lot more effort into improving skeletal frame, something that is completely neglected nowadays.

These barell ribcages and wide, lean shoulders are practically nonexistent today.

Guessing that the machines used today are more effective at developing abs than situps or isometric s available 50 years ago

They all had abs, literally every single person in your pics is vacuuming because that was a staple pose of bodybuilders of the earlier ages

If they had flexed their abs differently then they would have just as good of abs.

Everyone has abs at low body fat and they look good. I don't even train mine and at 8% they look great like I train them all the time

They don't have the "6 pack". They have small waists and that won't allow the pop out buckle abs. Small waists is more ideal . I'm not sure when the trend for "must have" 6 pack look came about, but it seemed influenced when roids took off in the 1970's.

First of all the old school pictures you used they're all vaccumming. Get pics of them flexing their abs and the difference would be less pronounced.

Conditioning. Old school bodybuilders got lean but never shredded like the bodybuilders of nowadays.

Pure size. Again old schoolers favoured aesthetics as opposed to pure size and this was reflected in their training.

Steroid abuse. Certain PEDS create a blocky bloated look. Many of which didn't exist or were scarcely used back in the day.

Shift in what's considered ideal. As for the average gym goer they all want abs more than anything so what do they do? Shit tonnes of crunches. They don't care about a v taper or small waist. They just want "muh abs"

Here is Steve Reeves relaxed. He still doesn't have 6 pack abs, and I bet he's at least down to 10% BF

More examples out there, probably. But what they all had in common back then was incredibly small waists. If you have small waists you will not have 6 pack.

they are raising their arms as well as inhaling. this causes the abs to disappear. i have the same thing happening when i raise just my arms!

Abs are genetic.i myself have a 4 pack. It just happens that many of the golden era had 4 packs.
They were juicing like every bodybuilder after the discovery of testosterone in the 1930s
