When chad treats her bad she feels as if SHE did something wrong and will work towards correcting it. An evolutionary reason could be that since chad has the best resources and more than one mate (think of lions, roosters, etc.) she is replaceable and he is not. Her lizard brain is telling her to get her shit together and appease him or else be without chads food shelter and protection.
