why do models smoke?

i've recently gotten into modeling and i've met some people and 7/10 of those people smoke cigs. besides shit like hollow cheeks and weight loss is it linked to something else? i know that it reduces appetite too.

It can damage the voice though for some people it seems (after decades of chain-smoking), but then for other life-long smokers it doesn't seem to hurt their voice much (just like there are life-long smokers who never get cancer from it). Are the detrimental effects of cigarettemaxxing and drugmaxxing in general on appearance and voice mostly determined by genetics?
