When people inseparably associate the idea of workers owning their means of production with, say gender reassignment for children or “critical race theory”, it deters people from developing class consciousness.

I would say that the majority of people hold beliefs like those that you have expressed- that the system (modern capitalism) is broken and that a small percentage of elites divide us whilst they restrict our rights and enrich themselves at our expense. But the culture war (and ignorance) is used to demonise the idea and distract them

A LOT of Trump supporters, for example could easily develop class consciousness (populism is very close in sentiment to communism, really) if you explained the concept of communism to them without buzzwords and without “woke” social stances
