Why do so many 2nd/3rd generation immigrants still have slight accents?

3rd gen myself and I have been told on multiple occasions I "sound white", I sound just like my parents so I suppose they also "sound white" too.

How can you be born in a country and still have a foreign accent, like wth.

A lot of these people don't even realise they have an accent. Sometimes its so slight you can't tell where they're from, but you can tell they're not white if that makes sense.

a lot of people will say someone has a foreign accent just because of their race even when they sound 100% american (or whichever country) that's just racism ngl

but if someone grew up listening to a different language and grew up hearing uncles/aunts etc who have that accent they're going to have a small amount of that accent in their own speech. It's not limited to foreign countries, if you're from the Northern United States and have uncles/aunts/parents etc who are from the Southern United States you're probably going to sound like 90% northern 10% southern
