Maybe it's because drugs can alter how your brain functions, mainly affecting the regions of the brain that allow you to evaluate risks and benefits when making decisions.

Doubt that's possible, unless you force yourself to do it. You can try out "self medication drugs" shit still isn't healthy but it's certainly safer than meth. As long you're aware that you have a mental health problem but don’t know any healthier ways to cope, You can try that out.
