Why does no one talk about mental overstimulation/sensory overload?

In todays environment, we're bombarded with sensory impressions almost 24/7, which results in an endless train of thoughts, chronic stress, brain fog etc. and renders us unable to see things as they are. When we're not flooded with external stimuli involuntarily, we actively entertain ourselves with music, media, food, drugs or inner monologues because we're so used to constant stimulation, the mere thought of doing nothing, even for a minute, feels like torture. From the moment we wake up until we fall asleep, our minds are chattering incessantly, fueled by more useless information and sensory stimuli than we could ever process. Oftentimes, this goes on even as we sleep.

When was the last time you did absolutely NOTHING, without falling asleep? And I'm not referring to meditation because that's SOMETHING. Doing nothing in terms of not doing anything specific, least of all trying to not think (which, again, is SOMETHING and causes stress). Being 100% passive both physically and mentally while awake. There's nothing more refreshing than doing nothing. It's like a mental reset.

tl;dr? Constant overstimulation is detrimental to your mental health and overall wellbeing. Go somewhere private, put your phone down, mute all devices, turn off the TV, sit or lie down, shut your eyes and do absolutely nothing for at least half an hour every day. Try not to fall asleep. Make this a habit. This is the best and easiest non-looksmaxing based advice you'll ever get here

I am able to do nothing to fall asleep and I think thats only because i am working and doing lots of physical activity during the day. The average person does amazingly little in terms of physical or mental exercise or stress throughout the day, like you say they have all this passive stimulation but they never really do anything actively that involves exerting energy. I think it would help to do that not only to get to sleep at night easier, but also to occupy their mind with something other than watching videos or scrolling through social media or whatever else. But also like you say no one will take this advice because modern life is built around these things and people would rather do that than take the time and effort to live a healthier life

I disagree with the part highlighted in bold. All the stimulation we get on a daily basis causes excessive, unproductive thinking that never stops, which is extremely exhausting mentally. We were conditioned from a young age to overthink and conceptualize everything

Reading a book requires constant focus. It's not as stimulating/effortless as watching a movie or listening to something. You're most likely mentally exhausted from chronic overstimulation, like most of us. Get some mental/sensory rest and do nothing to recharge. Your attention span will improve over time

I’m addicted to reading full threads I don’t enjoy it

doing nothing and not thinking and just being intensely happy in the moment is one of my favourite things to do.
