Same as between American English and British English: clearly diferent accents and some terms are named diferently: ex: bus in Brazilian Portuguese is "ônibus", while in Portugal it's named "autocarro".

But it's still the same language, specially in the writen form (I have a Portuguese book from 2010 and I never had a problem reading it, and that was way before I got interest in the subjects, by the way)

Portuguese people are more exposed to the Brazilian dialect, while the reverse is not common, so they (Portuguese) understand us (Brazilians) better than the opposite.
