why has bone mass changed through the years?

saw a old ass pic when my granpa was in the military, he had fucking insane bone mass square chad jawline with very prominent zygos, he was not chad, 4 other dudes were similar and the other 2 dudes were the nowdays average male, could this be a effect of not doing as much exercise and body work as people used to do in the past? i really cant find any other explanation to this tbh.
