"Theory" carries a much higher weight in a scientific context, and isn't to be confused with its colloquial usage
The theory aims to explain why something happens, and that why is often built on "laws" that explain what happens
law = what
theory = why (a well supported why)
Ofc, when people try to apply these terms in a scientific way themselves, they often just pick what sounds cool
