Its so weird seeing how many people are into obscure arthouse films and have Andrei tarkovsky and Ignar Bergman as their favorite directors but yet when you ask them about music they legit dont listen to anything beyond weeknd, kanye, coldplay, drake, michael jackson, the beatles, queen, kendrick etc... why is avant garde/ experimental music not as appealing to normies as left field movies are

Because most experimental music is just not good.

Give an example of nerdy music
the rateyourmusic stuff that fantano fans listen to

death grips, jpegmafia, swans, animal collective, godspeed you!black emporer, Unwound, Faust, Paysage D'Hiver, earl sweatshirt, slauson malone, ground zero etc....

Obscure is not the same as experimental.
Do you mean actually experimental or underground/unknown?
yeah obviously but a lot of obscure music tends to be experimental due to it not being accessible to the general public and more challenging to get into

I think it's the other way around.
Experimental music is obscure because it's challenging to get into, not because it's not accessible to the general public.
It's my opinion though.

depends what you consider experimental tons of normies think igor by tyler is super boundary pushing, cutting edge and out there because of their surface level consumption and understanding of music
