Why is Ratings sub so… different?
Compared to this sub, I mean. I thought it was just an extension of Offtopics, but at this point it’s pretty much similar to any beauty sub, but with ratings, which by the way are very generous.
What I’ve noticed about the sub:
- Strongly against plastic surgery (which I personally agree should be last resort, but sometimes it’s the only option to become conventionally attractive).
- Body positive (which I am all for, I hate body shaming, don’t get me wrong) but to the degree that the advice isn’t about conventional attractiveness anymore. You know, some women might have a bmi of 24, which is technically healthy, but would still benefit from dropping to 21-22 and that is backed up by science. If they are asking wether weight loss could help them become more attractive in the conventional sense, then the answer is usually a yes, not “oh no girl, your body is goals!”.
- Talking about how a feature that is widely considered a failo makes you look more “unique” and not boring, like all those Instagram models (that currently are considered to be the standard of beauty). I mean, there are plenty of supermodels with those failos, but they are usually more subtle and the rest of the face is just flawless.
- Talking about how subjective beauty is. I thought it was a sub about conventional attractiveness? That’s pretty objective, with the only difference being where you live.
- Not taking female gaze into account. I agree that we shouldn’t do anything to please women, but if you want to become conventionally attractive in order to reap the social and professional benefits, then keep in mind that women are around half of the population and most positions in the household are held by them.
I don’t know if this is an overcorrection, due to the sheer amount of femcels who try to put down men in all those other rating subs.
Another theory of mine, is based on the fact that even the most mainstream beauty subs right now are becoming pretty knowledgeable, men seem to put **a lot** of effort and money into their appearance, maybe the most we have during the past couple of decades. I guess a number of those people fell into the rabbit hole, searching for a female dominated rating sub and found Ratings?
What are your thoughts?
