Why is the population density so low in Mongolia?

This country is the 19th largest in the world in terms of territory.
At the same time, it has no access to the sea. And it had the largest land empire in the world.
Their population density is 1.7-2.2 per square kilometer. Which, incidentally, is a record.
What the fuck? Was it just the climate that influenced all this?

This is 60 times less than in France, 120 times less than in Germany, and 130 times less than in the UK.
Excluding Ulaanbaatar, approximately 1.28 people per square kilometer:eek:
