Why is there this rhetoric that Southern Europeans aren't white?

It amazes me how some people don't believe that southern Europeans (Italians, Spaniards, Greeks, Portuguese, etc.) are white. I mean, personally I have come across very white Spaniards that you wouldn't distinguish them from any other European, unless they tell you their nationality.

I have also seen that Italians are constantly being told that they are not white, but in Italian Renaissance paintings, for example, you will see how they represent themselves. Fascism, an ideology that many Anglo-Saxon supremacists love to follow, originated in Italy, by the way.

So, are southern Europeans just white for convenience or do they really fall under the white label?
