I’ve always been under the impression that while many factors are out of your control, one thing that should be in your control is your mental state
For instance you should be in control of what you belief, what you desire, what you pursue, what you feel, and how you react. But it isn’t that simple for a multitude of reasons. For one some things we are just born with, such as hunger, envy, angry, lust, etc. and it’s not uncommon for these urges to which we have very limited (and in some cases none) control over to work against us.
And even things that we developed on our own(or at least think we developed on our own) such as our moral compass or ethics, or values are very difficult to change. If you’ve lived with this notion your whole life to be honest, understanding, and kind hearted it’s very difficult to change that even if you’re placed in a hostile environment where you can clearly see that such values just are not feasible or even beneficial to anyone really. Or if you’ve desired one thing for a long time and realized it’s not within reach, or even possible, then it’s hard to stop desiring it.
Even our beliefs aren’t easy to change. I was arguing with an idiot online how slaughtering lambs is no different than a psychopath killing a cat or a dog. He had the audacity to argue that because he sliced the lambs neck “for its meat” that it’s somehow different than killing a cat. But I’m like so a psycho kills a cat and eats it like a feral human what’s the difference? “Bro cats are pets” and he was so adamant that he was right I’m like “What constitutes a pet? At this point you’re using empty labels to justify your cognitive dissonance.”
Tired of humanity.
