if the Russian army loses to small Ukraine army. Than Putin power internationally will be way less for sure ,because it's by other nations than seen as that the Russian army sucks balls. When they can't even overtake a neighbouring country with quit a small army.
I recall USA having ability to take over a country, far away from USA even (which makes it logistically difficult), in a matter of days. That looked impressive.

I can understand Putin frustration, how Ukraine was and is on a path of becoming fully in line with and incorporated with the EU and NATO. It will weaken Russia it's position, power, possibilities and influence.
I still disagree for Russia to go do this, as they do now. I would ideally see, that they just let Ukraine move to the West, EU, Nato. And Russia just accept, that it now has a lesser strong position.

I think it's retareded of the leaders in Russia. That they don't fully focus on making their economy good, instead of keeping it as giga shitty as it is now. That way, with a strong infuential economy, they can imo build more power and infuence, than through military coping as they do now.

Russia has always been poor due to geographical situation
They didn't get rich because not many trade routes harsh climate and not much fertile soil

They have more km² than USA but they have way less coastline which is bad

And there might be a lot of natural resources but they extract mainly coal (bad for long transportation) and gas
They can't extract too much of anything because they cant afford/doesnt pay off due to sanctions and there is transportation cost of extracted resources too.

Maybe if they weren't behind in tech and had automated extraction they could.

Upside of geographical situation is Russia impossible to conquer.
And their biggest advantage is military strength in local region so they have to constantly project that strength to remain relevant on political scene and get good deals.

They can never have global military power like USA who can transport a lot of troops tanks etc. on very big distances.
