Russia used to be a serious intellectual powerhouse, but now it's over for them. Losing all their talent. Everyone wanna leave the country. Back in the cold war it was insane pressure on them to intellectually outperform the west.

That's why you see so many insanely good russian mathematicians, chess players, programmers etc (the current smartest man alive is from belarus and he currently lievs in russia). Russia is massively overrepresented in Chess, like 1/3 of all chess GM's are russians.

Russia wanted to show intelletual superiority over the west. They did that via chess, math research and competitions. They changed up the entire school system (the problem solving, math cirriculumn over there was /is insanely hard incomparison to the west).
