There is a training done in dogs name operant conditioning
1775032424384

With dogs when its their feeding time when you call them using a noise or anything in its stead it becomes a reward to them even when there is no food present.
In the context of org the rep is the reward and the rep notif sound is the symbol or noise

There is a type of training done on humans or dogs named clicker training

As someone who has read a lot of psychology books that operant conditioning only explains a part of it. Humans are a lot more complex because of abstract thought and social conditioning than simple minded animals

The real reward is social validation/status layered on top. Reps signal people value what I said which taps into deeper human needs for approval and belonging. the emotional payload makes it potent and not everyone gets equally hooked. People vary in how sensitive they are to dopamine driven rewards.

I can't stand reps. I like conversation only. Every time I check a notification and see it's only rep and not a response I'm extremely disappointed.
