There is a theory that was popularized by Ernest Becker in the early 1970s that explores the idea that EVERYTHING around us that we call life culture, art, religion, music, debate, and the persuit of success is is a "hero-system" designed to buffer us from the paralyzing terror of knowing we will die.
Essentially, we build "hero-systems" like we do all those things i mentioned to feel important and permanent so we don't have to face the scary fact that we're one day going to die.
Since we know our bodies will die, we try to "live on" through our accomplishments. By being a "hero" in our own world like being a great parent, a successful boss, a famous artist, or a devout believer we feel like we’ve earned a spot in history or the afterlife.
Basically all of our actions are out of our anxiety for death and we are distracting ourselves from the fact that we'll die one day.
