Laxatives, especially stimulant and osmotic types, draw water into the intestines or increase bowel movements, leading to significant fluid and electrolyte loss. Severe dehydration can cause:

  • Low blood pressure (shock)
  • Irregular heartbeats (due to electrolyte imbalances)
  • Kidney failure
  • Severe weakness and confusion

If you’re constipated or otherwise need a shit, yes. It can make your stomach look flatter because you’ll no longer need a shit, but it won’t help with any trapped gas. In fact, they can irritate your intestines and make bloating from trapped gas worse. Laxative abuse can cause extreme bloating because of the irritation. Some laxatives seem to have a mild diuretic effect, but if you’re going for that, you’d be better off looking into actual diuretics. They help with water retention more effectively, but if they’re abused, of course complications of dehydration can occur. This can range from kidney damage to dry skin to… bloating. Again, they don’t help with trapped gas. You’re probably better off consuming potassium (bananas, sweet potatoes, spinach, and even Prime) to help with water retention, staying hydrated, and maybe considering some sort of herbal tea to aid digestion, all while avoiding foods high in sodium.
