I often discuss this with my dad. He often proposes the idea that women don't care about the appearance, citing his brother who apparently got girls even as a slightly chubby guy(it was in the late 80s, early 90s).
I reply to him in this way: It is logical to reason by analogy, men like beautiful women, and objectively, an overweight woman will have difficulties dating. It's therefore reasonable to assume that women like beautiful men, it is totally comprehensible and normal in my opinion, men want a "beautiful woman", woman can therefore also want a handsome man.
I believe that the idea that women don't care about looks comes perhaps from benevolent sexism, women were often considered "fragile" and other denigrating qualities were given to them. Women were also conditioned by their socialization to believe that they are "fragile" and that they need a "protector" and "provider", not just a beautiful handsome guy. Also, because of the sexism, the woman's opinion concerning her future husband chosen for her didn't matter in the past, a woman often didn't even have had a choice.
