Saying women will date ugly men doesn’t mean much if you are talking about ugly WOMEN dating ugly men. There are MANY men AND women with very unrealistic ideas about who they can attract.
Of course there are exceptions, but they are just that - exceptions. Most people end up with someone in their league appearance-wise. The most common exception to this is men with A LOT of money, not much in the looks dept, and a beautiful, younger wife (see Donald and Melania Trump).
Go to any spot where young couples go on a beautiful summer evening. If he is tall, handsome, and athletic, she is petite, slim and cute. It is the people chasing after people well out of their league who are most miserable. Let’s just admit it. A tall, overweight, unfortunate looking woman is wasting her time chasing after the top 10% of the male dating pool.
And overweight Star Wars nerds living their mom’s basement are wasting their time chasing after the 10% of the female dating pool.
