Some consider it a dialect, some consider it a language but most of my Chinese friends call it a dialect

Most Southerners know Mandarin and learn it in school VS their local dialect/languages like Hokkien and Canto

Most universities in China require taking Mandarin proficiency exams, if you want to go to a decent university you'd undoubtedly have to clear hsk6 papers

It's typically only older people or those in lower socioeconomic areas that still predominantly use the language. Some of my canto friends can't even speak it anymore, and hokkien I think is even more rare
