Ok what exactly is productive? what is more important that your own entertainment. Surely these people are not telling you to go work harder for some nonsensical goal, that they project onto you so in the process it gives their own effort more meaning in chasing after the mundane.

Well, nobody really says that you shouldn't watch anime, movies and play video games, what they mean is that if you isolate yourself and your only hobbies/interests are geek/gamer/otaku stuff, that will compromise your social skills and well/mental being.
