Forearms are just like biceps and triceps, they need direct work, the most effective exercises are wrist flexion exercises, that is what arm wrestlers use to get better at their sport.

Also, the size of your muscles isn't just defined by insertions, it's defined especially by your genetics for muscle building, some guys have a higher potential for muscle size than others so even at low levels of strength, they look big, while others are the complete opposite and can be extremely strong but skinny, Maxx Chewning is a good example of this:
