They base those relationships off give or take politics, how can being your friend benefit them
-can you being their friend raise or lower their social status?
-can you being their friend get them more access to social events like parties
-can you being their friend make it easier for them to get laid?
-can you being their friend help them expand their professional network and make more money?

You can be an absolute scumbag degenerate, but if people see that being associated with you will raise their status, they will kiss your ass

If you don't have social status and few connections, you could be an excellent and interesting conversationalist, but they will see you as lower than dirt

The second a norm friend has the option to betray you to achieve higher social status, they will take it 10 times out of 10
