The only time you will gain mass during a cut its if you didn't get your " Newbie gains" yet
If you have never been in a gym and you start gymcelling,you will gain some mass during your first months,even if you are in a deficit
THEN , if you stay in a deficit you will simply not gain any muscle anymore. You will need extra calories for new tissue of muscles
Basically gymcelling during a cut if you took your newbie gains already its mostly waste of time
