I (15F) am a rising senior, which means college applications are very approaching soon.
This is also where I should mention I am Indian, so education and schooling are taken very seriously in our culture. My parents (36F and 47M) are also super conservative, and I’m not allowed to socialize with anyone except for people who my parents approve and deem fit.
Considering these rules, for the most part, I try to be a good student who prioritizes school over everything else. I take mostly honors classes and AP classes, and usually maintain A’s in them. Both my freshman year and sophomore year of high school, I had straight A’s. However, junior year, I ended up with 2 B’s. I know that it’s not an excuse, but I was struggling with my eating disorder, and had no motivation to get work done.
Currently, my mother’s grandmother (76F) is living with us for the time being. She cannot speak or understand English, and only speaks Hindi.
As for the issue, I was speaking to my friend (17M) in English about writing supplements for colleges. We are also talking about where we are applying to college. Usually, I don’t speak English at home because my parents find it disrespectful to our culture. But the friend in question only speaks English and Russian. This turned into a huge issue because I was speaking English and my great-grandmother could not understand what I was speaking. She started berating me, and demanded I let her know what I was speaking about as it was not appropriate that a girl my age be talking to a boy without other people listening. For the record, nothing we were talking about was inappropriate; it was just about colleges and our future plans. And, my friend and I have a solely platonic relationship. My parents, who didn’t hear the conversation between my friend and I, intervened and agreed with my great-grandmother. They got mad, and told me that I was a shameless girl who was ruining the reputation of our family by talking to boys, that I was a white-washed American, that I act like a prostitute and cannot keep my legs closed, and that I was a disgrace for a daughter. They took my phone for a month and installed cameras in my bedroom and claimed that they now know the reason as to why my grades dropped severely.
