Two teenage girls who pleaded guilty for their roles in a carjacking that killed an Uber Eats driver have been sentenced to juvenile detention until they turn 21, a D.C. Superior Court spokesman said.


One of the girls, who was 13 at the time of the crime, appeared Tuesday in family court, where a judge sentenced her to confinement at the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, the maximum sentence.


The judge told the girl, who is now 14, that the March 23 carjacking was "terrible and devastating," according to NBC Washington.

The other girl, who is 15, was given the same sentence during her court appearance last month. The teens are not being named because they are minors.

Metropolitan police said the teens tried to carjack Mohammad Anwar, 66, near Nationals Park and assaulted him with a stun gun, causing the vehicle to crash. Anwar, whom his family said was an Uber Eats delivery driver, died at a hospital.

Anwar's family said he was a Pakistani immigrant who came to the United States in 2014 "to build a better life for himself and his family."

"He was simply at work ... providing for his family when his life was tragically taken in an appalling act of violence," they wrote in a GoFundMe account shortly after his death. "Words can not describe how our family is feeling currently. We will carry him with us always, but it doesn’t take the pain away of losing him so tragically and so unexpectedly soon."

Victim​

Anwar, 66, who immigrated to Springfield, Virginia in 2014, was a father and grandfather, survived by a wife and two adult children in the United States, while his four grandchildren live in Pakistan.[1] He was working as an Uber Eats driver in the Navy Yard area of D.C. when two teen girls assaulted him with a stun gun and crashed his Honda Accord while attempting to hijack it.[2]

Anwar was ejected from the car during the carjacking,[3] landing on the sidewalk in front of Nationals Park, he was pronounced dead on arrival. The two hijackers were helped from the car by National Guardsmen stationed near the stadium as part of Operation Capitol Response.

Perpetrators​

The perpetrators were both teenagers, one age 13 from southeast Washington, D.C., and another 15 from Fort Washington, Maryland. Police said it was not the first recent crime for one of the two.[4] Both were arrested at the scene and charged with felony murder and carjacking the same day, pleading "not involved" (the juvenile equivalent of not guilty).[5] Some observers called for the girls to be tried as adults, but District of Columbia law prohibits 13-year olds from being tried as adults, and the prosecutor in the case did not wish to try the 15-year old suspect as an adult.[6]

Prosecutors offered the two suspects plea bargains, allowing them to plead guilty to felony murder in exchange for dismissing other charges. Prosecutors announced that the 15-year old accepted this deal on May 11, 2021, and that the 13-year old accepted on June 3, 2021.[7][8] The 15-year old received the maximum sentence allowed by law and was remanded to the care of a youth agency until deemed rehabilitated or reaching the age of 21; the younger girl (age 14 at time of sentencing) received the same sentence on July 6, 2021.[9][10]

Mayor Muriel Bowser was criticized after sharing a video on preventing auto thefts in response to the killing.[11] Carjackings in the Navy Yard area had tripled since the same time in the previous year.[1]
