TL;DR:
25M with naturally deep-set eyes. Over the last 1–2 years I’ve noticed more under-eye shadowing, fluctuating bags, and very mild early nasolabial folds, especially under overhead lighting and during periods of stress. No deep wrinkles or laxity. Face looks noticeably better after intense exercise, suggesting a circulatory/inflammatory component. Looking to understand what’s normal facial maturation vs. structural anatomy vs. edema/inflammation, and what skincare can realistically improve versus what typically requires procedures

I’m 25 (M) and I’ve always had softer facial features. Throughout my teens and early adulthood, I was usually perceived as younger than my age (often 18–21, easily up until early 2025).
I’m not trying to look significantly younger than I am — I understand that at 25 the face naturally matures. What I’m trying to understand is why, over the past 1–2 years, certain features started being read as a more “tired / worn / exhausted” appearance, and what part of this is structural versus potentially treatable. I don’t have true wrinkles or deep expression lines.
I’ve also noticed that depending on how my eye area looks (more shadowed or more swollen), the way I’m socially perceived seems to shift slightly — possibly because it conveys more fatigue or tension. I’m not sure if this is just my own projection or a common facial-reading effect.
What I’ve been noticing:
Naturally deep-set eyes, with more pronounced shadowing under overhead lighting.
Lower-eye bags that seem to fluctuate (sometimes more puffy, sometimes more hollow).
Early, mild nasolabial folds (still shallow).
A more tired look depending on lighting and facial expression.
Early, mild hairline recession/temple thinning (still subtle), which I imagine may also influence overall facial maturity perception.
Prolonged periods of mental stress (not intermittent, but chronically elevated), which I suspect may affect facial tension, muscle tone, and the eye area.
Something curious:
After playing soccer or doing intense exercise, my face looks noticeably better — the eye area appears more even, less puffy, and less shadowed. This makes me think there’s a circulatory, inflammatory, or fluid-retention component involved, not just fixed anatomy.
General context:
No sudden health changes.
Healthy diet.
No deep wrinkles or real skin laxity.
Skin quality is generally good.
I exercise regularly.
Non-smoker (quit cigarettes 2 years ago).
Currently using a 3 mg nicotine vape (planning to quit).
Sleep is average.
I have a recent history of depression, which I suspect could influence facial expression, muscle tension, inflammation, or sleep quality (sleep has been somewhat unstable), even without obvious external changes.
I’ve been told my eyes are structurally deep-set (anatomy, not just pigmentation). I’m trying to better separate:
What is normal facial maturation in the mid-20s
What is natural structure/shadow
What could be edema or inflammation
What skincare can realistically improve
What only changes with procedures
Specific questions:
Do caffeine, niacinamide, or cold compresses actually help with fluctuating under-eye bags?
Do vitamin C or mild retinoids help when there’s shadowing plus very early folds?
Can richer moisturizers or hyaluronic acid visually soften early nasolabial folds?
In more structural cases, is light corrective makeup usually the most practical solution?
I’m not looking for miracles — just realistic expectations about what skincare can and can’t do for deep-set eyes, variable under-eye bags, and mild early folds.
