I think we lived off carbs . Protein is more of a luxury we didn’t always have access to it. Excess protein turns to fat anywaysProtein restriction is dumb. It's fairly well established that older people have to maintain higher protein intakes to not suffer sarcopenia and to live longer. Protein restriction will lead to dementia, osteoporosis and many of the usual afflictions of old age you see in people who eat normal diets (the typical 10% protein is incredibly low).
Calorie restriction is a bit of a misnomer because it's not really restriction at all, it's eating like you're supposed to eat. If you eat nothing but what you can hunt and what you can gather from a forest you will struggle to get more than 2000 calories a day. The idea of calorie restriction only exists because the modern diet is so high in useless calories that we think it's extreme to only eat what we need to eat.
tldr for almost all of human evolution humans ate a very high protein low calorie diet, and lived to their 70s and 80s with regularity, without clean water, sanitation or toothpaste.
